Ethiopia to Enhance Diaspora’s Support to GERD Through Lottery

Ethiopia has plans to introduce a lottery to be sold to the Diaspora to enhance their contribution to the Grand Dam, Office of the National Council for the Coordination of Public Participation on the Construction of GERD said.

According to the Office, 500,000 lottery tickets, each costs 10 USD, will be sold to the Diaspora to improve their support to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The lottery, which will be the first of its kind in involving the Diaspora, will be drawn in June.

Media and Communication Director Hailu Abrham told ENA that preparation has been completed to launch the lottery.

The Diaspora has so far contributed a lot to the construction of the Dam through professional activities, purchasing bonds, and donation.

Ethiopian nationals and origin have so far purchased bonds worth over 800 million Birr.

The office in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been undertaking various activities to further strengthen their engagement, he added.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, in which its construction was launched in 2011, has reached 64 percent.
